Ever since I finished the Mississippi river paddle, I have wondered if I have another long distance solo paddle in me. Perhaps there was beginner's luck the first time around, and I should quit while ahead.
The universe has indicated that I should to do another.
Firstly, I still have my kayak. Attempts to sell it at the end of the last trip didn't attract a price anywhere near what I thought it was worth. Clearly it was supposed to stay with me.
Secondly, I have wonderful kayak contacts. Last year we drove out to the Mississippi river to revisit some of the people who had been so kind on the last trip. As we approached St Louis, we fell into a convoy of cars with kayaks. We all ended up in the same carpark in St Charles that was our destination. They turned out to be members of the St Louis kayak club, returning from a day's outing. I now have their contact details should I need assistance on a trip that ends or passes through St Louis.
Finally, my daughter and son-in-law have bought a holiday home in upstate New York which offers somewhere for long-term storage of my kayak. Clearly, a trip from the Hudson river to Chicago is my destiny.
