Risk Management

Followers of my Mississippi blog may recall that I identified 17 risks that I could face that weren’t common to kayaking generally and particularly kayaking in NZ e.g. snakes, poison ivy, bears, barge tows etc.

Most of those risks will be present on this trip to a greater or lesser degree with the exception of commercial boat traffic (except on the Detroit and St Clair rivers)There won’t be the barge tows and while there are freighters, they are not nearly so frequent as on the “suicide alley” portion of the Mississippi.

One risk on this trip that I faced only occasionally on the river, is crossing wide exposed bodies of water e.g. Saginaw Bay, Grand Traverse Bay on the Michigan Peninsula. The wind can get up very suddenly on the Great Lakes, and I do not want tp be in the middle of a 30k crossing if it does.
