The US long weekend started with strong winds and rainy conditions which forced Greg to spend a over a day on land. The family collected him from Robin and Kaare's house beside the Germantown boat ramp, and returned him there when there was a chance of continuing his journey. After a hard ten miles of paddling by Greg and a short drive for us, we all went out for lunch at a French restaurant in the charming little town of Hudson. After lunch Greg was able to reach Coxsackie where he was shouted many beers by the locals at the boating club. He spent the night with Bruce Romanchuk who was on the Great Hudson River Paddle with him some years ago. The next day we met Greg for a lovely lunch at the New Baltimore boat club. He spent another night with Bruce's family after a hard slog up to Albany.
Now Greg is in the Erie Canal which is about 500km long.It should take him at least 10 days to reach Lake Erie. After living the good life over the weekend, Greg is actually camping out tonight near Lock 7. The locks here are as deep, but not as wide as on the Mississippi River. As each of these locks raises boats approximately 33 feet higher above sea level, Greg is now several hundred feet higher than when he began paddling.
